  • Why does the black tank smell when using TankTechsRx

You should not be experiencing odor while using TankTechsRx in your black tank. If you have odor issues, we need to do some trouble shooting to figure out what is happening.

    • Use TankTechsRx in the gray tank. Often gray tank odors are mistaken for black tank odor (yes, it truly can be that bad.)

    • Be sure you flush enough water. This is different than just adding water to the tank. Always fill the toilet bowl with water before any flush involving paper or solids.

    • Add more TankTechsRx. There may be something going on in the tank that requires a bit more product. Try adding another half ounce to see if that clears up the odor.

    • Get personal assistance. If none of these things has worked, we need to do some troubleshooting. Feel free to contact us if you need help determining the cause of the odor.

  • What soaps and cleaners are compatible with TankTechsRx?

It has been our experience that the average dish soap, cleaning products and personal care products are not introduced into the black or gray tank in adequate amounts to inhibit the effectiveness of TankTechsRx.

If you believe the cleaner you like best is especially harsh or toxic, we recommend cleaning your toilet right before you are about to empty your full tank. That way, the bacteria in TankTechsRx has had lots of time to mature and multiply in the tank so your cleaning agent is less likely to harm enough of the bacteria to cause a problem.

Dilute your product with plenty of water when washing it down into the tank, and then empty the tank as you planned. This procedure will allow you to get that product out of the tank and then the 1/2 ounce of TankTechsRx you add after emptying will replenish the environment with fresh bacteria. Most of the time, these products are used in relatively small concentrations (e.g., a couple squirts, or a few sprays) and are diluted enough in the tank to do little or no harm.

  • Is it necessary to use RV toilet paper?

Not if you are using TankTechsRx in your black tank according to the instructions and flushing your toilet with plenty of water. Feel free to use the toilet paper you like best!

  • Can I use TankTechsRx in the gray tank for gray tank odor?

TankTechsRx is a great treatment for gray/galley tanks. If you have ever experienced problems with gray tank odor, you know how awful it can be. Those odors, as well as sensor issues, are usually caused by grease and mold and TankTechsRx takes care of both of those substances.

Even if you like to keep your gray tank valve open when you have access to sewer hookups, we highly recommend travelling with TankTechsRx in the tank, so it can slosh up unto the very top of the tank and treat a problem area that is hard to reach otherwise.

  • Does TankTechsRx expire?

The microbiologists who make our product say that a bottle is best when used within 3 years. That being said, a bottle we used for testing purposes was still just as effective after 5 years.

  • How do I leave the right amount of water in the tank?

If you are using a clear sewer hose adapter (Camco and Valterra sell several different angles to suit your situation):

Open the valve. When the tank begins to drain, the adapter will be full of effluent. As the flow slows down, the level in the adapter will get lower until it fills only about a third of the bottom of the adapter.

At this point, there will be approximately 1/2 to 1 inch of liquid in your tank. Close the valve, add 1/2 ounce (i.e., one Tablespoon) of TankTechsRx to the tank and use the tank normally.

If you do not have a clear adapter:

Open the valve. When the tank begins to drain the gushing sound will alert you to the fact that the hose is full of effluent. As the flow slows down, the sound will get quieter until you can tell the flow is much less than when you started.

At this point, it is safe to say that you still have liquid containing mature bacteria left in the tank. Close the valve, add 1/2 ounce (i.e., one Tablespoon) of TankTechsRx to the tank and use the tank normally.

  • How long does TankTechsRx take to clean sensors?

There is no way of knowing what specifically is causing problems with your sensors and there are several variables that affect how quickly the bacteria in TankTechsRx can get the job done (if it can). We have had users report cleared sensors in a week and others who say it took a year.

The good news is that every minute TankTechsRx is in the tank, it is working to consume waste, clean the walls and/or sensor probes and improving the health of your tank.

  • Is TankTechsRx okay if it freezes?

We recommend not freezing the product because we have had reports from others who said that their frozen bottle seemed to lose some of its power and they had to use more to get the same results.

We tried freezing a couple bottles in the freezer and didn't see any change in effectiveness, but we take those reports seriously. That's why we included the do not freeze warning on the label. We usually recommend that folks keep the bottle at room temperature with the cap on snugly. That seems to be working.

  • How do I winterize with TankTechsRx

We recommend storing your holding tanks dry whenever there is a chance of freezing. Liquid in the tank can freeze and crack the tank, so if you feel the need to put antifreeze in the tank because you are unable to get all the water out of it, just remember that when the weather warms and you are ready to use TankTechsRx again, those tanks should be rinsed well (we suggest filling each tank with water, emptying, filling it again, and emptying – rinsing twice is usually plenty to rid the tank of the antifreeze) and add 2 ounces since you are starting from scratch.

  • Am I flushing my toilet wrong?

The most important tip you will ever get regarding the use of your black tank is that anytime you flush anything more solid than urine into that tank, always always always fill the toilet with water before flushing. Some folks aren't aware that the toilet is manufactured with a way to fill it with water for just this purpose.

You either press the foot pedal down halfway or lift up on the foot pedal. This should cause water to flow into the toilet and you can fill the bowl before you flush. It is very important to do this before you flush. It is not at all the same as simply adding water to the tank. You want the whooshing of a full bowl of water to flow through the pipe and down into the tank. It prevents things getting hung up in your pipe and keeps them from landing right below the pipe in the tank and stacking up.

  • Will antifreeze kill TankTechsRx?

Yes, even the “safe” antifreeze will damage the microbes in TankTechsRx. We have had reports of people using TankTechsRx with antifreeze with no problems, but we do not recommend it. After having antifreeze in your tanks, it is best to rinse well (fill the tank with fresh water, empty, fill again, and empty) before adding TankTechsRx.

  • Can I dump my RV tanks into my home septic tank when using TankTechsRx?

Absolutely! Our wonderful combination of bacteria is so effective in septic systems that we also sell the same liquid you use in your RV in a bottle labeled with instructions for home septic use. We call it TankTechsRx for Septic Systems.

  • Is it necessary to use something else with TankTechsRx for odor control?

Nope! TankTechsRx is all you need for holding tank care and maintenance. It is formulated to address the issues that holding tanks have and we all know odor is the worst one!
